There are many different toothpastes on the market, and each of them boasts different features that are supposed to be perfect for your teeth. And unless we have an issue such as tooth sensitivity or gum disease, most of us don’t think too much about what toothpaste we use.
But choosing the proper toothpaste is a critical element of dental health. Below is your toothpaste guide to help you choose the right products for you and your family.
A Note About Fluoride
The exact type of toothpaste that will be best for you largely depends upon your own personal preferences and any issues, such as sensitivity, you may have. The one thing you should always look for, regardless of the specific formula you choose, is a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent tooth decay.
One warning – excessive fluoride at a young age can stain the teeth, hence there is a need for kids to use children’s toothpaste, which contains a smaller concentration of fluoride.
Teeth Whitening
Whitening pastes use mild abrasives to polish teeth and remove newer stains. Discolourations resulting from medications and older stains will not come off. Also, teeth whitening toothpastes are not nearly as quick and effective as a Prevent Dental in-office whitening treatment, or even our convenient “at home” kits. If teeth whitening is your main concern, it is best to come in and talk to us!
Tartar Buildup
If you suffer from “calculus” or plaque hardening, choosing a good tartar control paste can stop bacteria from stabilizing and prevent tartar buildup. However, before starting on such a paste, come to Prevent Dental and get a good cleaning to scrape off any residual buildup that already exists.
Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth
Many people have teeth that are sensitive to hot or cold temperatures. Toothpaste that is made for sensitive teeth is usually made with potassium nitrate or strontium chloride. These compounds work by blocking pathways in the teeth that are attached to the nerves. It can take up to a month of using this toothpaste to start feeling relief.
Toothpaste for Younger Patients
Babies and young children need to develop healthy teeth and gums so that they can talk and eat properly. The most important thing you can do is help them get into the habit of brushing their own teeth twice a day. You can do this by helping them brush their teeth, or you can add some fun and let them watch you brush your own!
Toothpaste for Babies?
It is important to introduce your children to dental hygiene as quickly as possible. So they can get used to the sensation, it’s wise to get in the habit of brushing your baby’s gums, even before their first tooth comes through. Some babies may not enjoy having their teeth brushed at first, so you may have to keep trying or make it into a game.
Brush your baby’s gums and teeth twice a day using a small amount of mild toothpaste. Once you have finished brushing help them to spit the toothpaste out, which will not necessarily come naturally to them.
Children’s Toothpaste
Brush your children’s teeth for two minutes every morning and evening. Start by brushing their teeth for them, before helping them to do it themselves under your supervision.
As children age, you can slowly increase the amount of fluoride in their toothpaste. Children’s toothpastes contain varying levels of fluoride so you can provide their teeth with increasing protection as they grow up. They have also been formulated to protect tooth enamel and contain an antibacterial action. Children’s toothpastes come in delicious fruit flavours, to help make brushing their teeth far more enjoyable.
Other Toothpaste Options
There are a variety of other options including natural toothpastes and toothpastes specifically designed for braces, dentures, and people who are not comfortable with fluoride.
