Everyone wants a beautiful white smile, but trying to achieve it should not bring danger to oral health.
This is why at Prevent Dental Suite, we always recommend you use professional whitening treatment instead of over-the-counter kits.
Over-the-counter teeth whitening kits might seem like a quick, simple solution to get that brighter smile, but they can significantly damage your teeth, gums, and even your stomach.
In-office teeth whitening services guarantee you great results, quickly, safely, and efficiently without damaging your dental health. This is why in-office teeth whitening is among the most requested cosmetic dental procedures.
Over-the-Counter Whitening
The following are three of the most common methods of over-the-counter teeth whitening:
Whitening Toothpaste
Almost all toothpaste contains some mild abrasives – they help remove superficial stains from your tooth enamel. This is only one of the reasons we recommend you brush twice daily!
To add “whitening” to their toothpaste, some manufacturers add polishing agents or chemicals to improve the tooth whitening effectiveness of the toothpaste.
However, these kinds of toothpaste typically only whiten your teeth up to one shade.
It often takes several weeks for the effects of the whitening to be seen, and it is only effective if you’ve stopped any habits, such as coffee or smoking, that lead to tooth discolouration.
When using a teeth-whitening toothpaste, make sure that it has the ADA (Australian Dental Association) seal of approval.
Whitening Strips and Gels
Another OTC approach is products that apply a whitening gel to your teeth, usually using adhesive strips, but sometimes using brushes.
These products are peroxide-based, but they have extremely low levels of peroxide compared the stronger treatment you can receive from Prevent Dental Suite.
Gels are applied to your teeth using a small brush, although specific instructions vary depending on the particular product and strength of the peroxide.
It often takes a few days for gels to begin to show results and the results will last a quarter of a year, or less (Compared to the year or more offered by treatment from Prevent Dental Suite), whitening strips are very similar.
They are small strips that are imbued with a peroxide-based gel on one side. You apply the strips, gel-side to teeth, twice daily for 30 minutes each session.
This goes on for two weeks. Results will begin to show within a few days, and like the results of gels, should last for roughly four months.
Teeth Bleaching
Teeth bleaching comes in OTC and professional (delivered by your dentist) forms.
OTC bleaching features standardised trays, which are not fully effective at stopping leakage of potentially damaging bleaching agents, and a bleaching agent usually in the form of a gel.
The gel can leak, damaging your tongue, gums, and even stomach. Over-use (OTC bleaching is unsupervised can lead to tooth damage. Finally, this bleaching lasts only four months or so.
The most effective teeth whitening procedure is professional dental teeth bleaching. A dentist uses a gel that contains much stronger agents than over-the-counter products, thereby giving effective results.
An over the counter bleaching agent will typically contain 10 to 22 per cent carbamide peroxide, the equivalent of three per cent hydrogen peroxide.
The bleaching agents used by dentists, on the other hand, contains between 15 to 43 per cent hydrogen peroxide. This is a much more effective level of bleaching agent.
Additionally, your Prevent Dental Suite dentist protects the soft tissues of your mouth from the materials used on your teeth.
Unlike OTC teeth whitening, a Zoom! Whitening can give you whiter teeth for more than a year before another treatment may be required – depending on your smoking, dietary, and drinking habits.
