How Do Mouthguards Protect the Teeth?
Mouthguards are effective in protecting the teeth against fractures, breakage or dislocation. They provide cushioning around the teeth, protecting them from physical injury. Essentially, in a trauma, the mouthguard’s rubber absorbs and disperses the impact, preventing tooth-to-tooth contact. This also helps protect the lower jaw and surrounding soft tissues.
Custom-fitted mouthguards generally provide more tailored protection compared to generic or store-bought options.

Who Are Mouthguards For?
Sporting mouthguards are ideal for preventing dental trauma during physical activities or contact sports. They are also recommended for those who grind their teeth. Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard is effective in preventing chipped or broken teeth, soft tissue damage, and other injuries.
Mouthguards can be worn by both children and adults.
Your dentist may recommend a custom mouthguard or splint designed specifically for your needs, including
• Custom mouthguards for sports or physical activities
• Custom mouthguards for teeth grinding (bruxism)
• Sleeping Mouthguards (for snoring and sleep apnea) or mouthguards designed for both snoring and sports
Mouthguards Appointment Process
Your mouthguard appointment process will start with an initial consultation with one of our dentists. During this consultation, your dentist will assess your condition and provide you with the most appropriate mouthguard options. The dentist will take impressions of your teeth and bite.
After your consultation appointment, our dental technicians will handcraft your custom-fitted mouthguard in the dental laboratory. When you receive your custom mouthguard, your dentist will outline how to best use it and manage your condition.

Types of Mouthguards
• Custom-fitted Mouthguards – Custom-fitted mouthguards are made based on your dental impressions to achieve a comfortable fit. Your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and bite, and in our on-site dental laboratory, a dental technician will handcraft your custom mouthguard. Custom mouthguards generally provide improved comfort and protection compared to generic types.
• Teeth Grinding Mouthguards – Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching) is a common condition, often occurring while sleeping. Teeth grinding can lead to a range of dental problems and injuries such as toothaches, jaw pain, sore gums, and fractured teeth. A custom-fitted occlusal splint may help reduce wear on teeth caused by bruxism.
• Boil-and-bite Mouthguards – These mouthguards are made from a thermoplastic material, and you can shape them to your mouth at home. These are not as effective as custom-fitted mouthguards and are best used as a short-term solution.
• Over-the-counter Mouthguards – A one-size-fits-all type of mouthguard, these are ready to wear, although they don’t usually fit very well as they are not moulded to your teeth. As they do not fit perfectly, they offer the least protection.

FAQs
A custom-fitted mouthguard for sports is designed to fit comfortably without affecting speech or breathing. However, a poorly-fitting mouthguard may cause problems if it affects your breathing or feels uncomfortable.
Yes – in fact, we recommend it! If your braces get damaged, they can be expensive to repair, and this can disrupt your orthodontic treatment. We can design a custom-fitted mouthguard that accommodates braces comfortably.
You should clean your mouthguard after every use and store it in a cool, dry place the material won’t warp or lose shape. We can check your mouthguard every time you visit us and replace it if it's damaged or your mouth changes shape.
To maintain a clean and long-lasting mouthguard, it’s important to follow a few simple maintenance steps.
- Rinse after every use: It’s recommended to rinse your mouthguard with warm water (not hot water) after every use to remove dental debris.
- Daily cleaning: You should use a separate toothbrush to gently brush the mouthguard clean after every use. With cool water, you can use either non-abrasive toothpaste, soap or mouthwash to gently brush your mouth-guard clean.
- Monthly deep cleaning: For a comprehensive clean, it’s recommended to do a thorough clean of your mouthguard at least once per month. This can be done using non-abrasive denture cleaning tablets by following the packet’s instructions, or you may use natural cleaning solutions such as vinegar or hydrogen peroxide (if recommended by your dentist).
- Correct storage: Keep your mouthguard in a clean, dry case in between uses. You should also gently clean the case once per month.
A professionally custom-fitted mouthguard can help prevent dental injuries or reduce the likelihood or impact of dental injuries, making it an important preventive measure. However, a poorly fitting mouthguard bought from a store may not offer the same level of protection and could increase the risk of discomfort or injury if it doesn’t fit properly.
Mouthguards are recommended by the dental industry and are usually covered in part by health funds or other benefits such as the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), if the mouthguard is for a child under 17. Some health funds cover 100% of the cost, and we can provide you with a detailed quote at your consultation.
We'll tell you more about the costs and our insurance, and payment options when you visit us for your consultation.
