Having a bright and beautiful smile can enhance your appearance and make you appear younger and healthier. But not everyone has a perfect smile. Some of us may have a chipped or broken tooth or gaps between too-small teeth. Teeth can become be stained or dingy.
The good news is that Prevent Dental Suite has several treatments to address these kinds of issues, including tooth bonding. Tooth bonding is the application of one or several layers of composite material, a plastic with other materials included to increase strength, hardness, and durability.
Tooth bonding is an economical approach to many tooth repairs–and it can usually be completed in a single visit.
If you are considering an upgrade to your smile, Prevent Dental would be happy to sit down with you for a consultation as to whether or not tooth bonding is the right step towards improving your smile.
What is Tooth Bonding Used for?
Dental bonding works best for minor cosmetic dentistry issues. Patients with major dental issues such as missing or broken teeth require more complicated cosmetic dentistry and restoration treatments to improve their smile.
Consider tooth bonding for cavities, to improve the look of discoloured teeth, to provide cosmetic repair to damaged or misshapen teeth, cover gaps between teeth, replace amalgam fillings, protect exposed tooth roots, and even protect teeth from additional damage.
What is the Process?
Tooth bonding treatment is usually a simple procedure that takes just 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.
Dental bonding is often the most affordable option to consider when you are trying to improve slight imperfections in your teeth. During dental bonding, we apply a tooth-colored composite material to flawed teeth.
First, we match the resin to the color of your teeth to ensure that it looks good once in your mouth. Next we etch the surface of the tooth to give it a rougher texture and allow the resin composite to have a better bond with the tooth. The tooth is also quickly treated with an acidic etching liquid, which also promotes better bonding. Then, your dentist applies and shapes the composite resin, often applying several layers to achieve a natural effect. Finally, your Kallangur dentist will smooth and polish your tooth.
How Long Will it Last?
Given proper precautions and care, and perhaps a little bit of luck, the working life of a bonded tooth is between 3 and 10 years.
Avoid staining by avoiding foods with the following contents:
- Chromogens — compounds with strong pigments that cling to enamel
- Tannins — plant-based compounds that make it easier for stains to stick to teeth
- Acids — these make surfaces softer and rougher, so it’s easier for stains to set in
Tobacco products also cause stains to bonded teeth, which is just another reason not to use them.
Chipping can occur if you bite down on a hard food or object, like a piece of crusty bread, ice, or pens. Impact from sports or accidents can also damage your teeth, so if always be sure to wear a mouthguard when you play!
At home, you need to follow good dental habits. This means brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush, floss at least once a day and visit Prevent Dental for routine check-ups and cleanings.
So while there is not a precise answer as to how durable a bonded tooth will be, with proper care it is possible to expect up to a decade of use.
