If we’re honest with ourselves at Prevent Dental Suite, we know that visiting the dentist is not high on most people’s list of favorite things to do.
As much as we love dentistry and taking care of smiles, we know the general public doesn’t always share our passion. That’s why we do everything we can to make sure we provide dental care in a way that respects your busy schedule.
And this year, to celebrate Dental Health Week (7 to 13 August), which has taken Oral Health For Busy Lives as its theme, we are here to explain to you why dental care/hygiene is necessary even in the busiest of schedules, and how you can balance your hectic life with healthy teeth and a stunning smile.
If You Think You’re Too Busy For Dental Care, You’re Not Alone.
Some estimates are that 30 percent of people don’t brush twice a day and up to 23 percent go without brushing for two days or more in any given year. That’s just not healthy.
As to flossing, studies show that over 30 percent of people floss less than once a day, with nearly 20 percent not flossing at all.
But, poor dental health can lead to:
- Bad Breath
- Germs Start To Multiply
- Cavities
- Gum Disease
- Lost Teeth
- Diabetes
- Risk For Dementia
- Immune System Damage
- Brain Abscess
Obviously, any of these health problems can consume more than just time, and in some cases be a threat to your life. A little time spent on dental hygiene on a day-to-day basis can save tremendous amounts of time in the long run.
Home Is Where The Heart (And Great Smile!) Is
All of us at Prevent Dental want to help you keep your healthy oral hygiene routine! Below are some tips on what your oral hygiene routine should look like, so your teeth can remain beautiful and healthy.
Brushing Your Teeth. Brush for 2 minutes, twice a day, spending an equal amount of time (30 seconds) in each quarter of your mouth.
Flossing Your Teeth. Floss once a day, using about 45 cm of floss, unwinding it as you go.
Mouthwash. Sip a small amount of mouthwash and swish it around your mouth for 30-40 seconds before expelling it.
Clean your tongue. Use a toothbrush, floss, or a dedicated scraper to clean the surface of your tongue.
Dental Hygiene “To Go!”
One way to ensure good dental hygiene is to bring it with you wherever you are. The easiest way to do that, is to pack a dental kit that can go to the office, gym, school, wherever. You can use the kit whenever you have a spare moment.
Your dental kit should contain (at least):
- Toothbrush and Travel Case
- Toothpaste
- Floss (Or floss threader)
- Tongue Scraper (Can be a toothbrush, floss, or scraping tool)
- Mouthwash
- Any other specific tools you need
Eat Well, Keep Teeth, Keep Health, Save Time!
Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet isn’t just important to your overall health, its important to your oral health as well, and shouldn’t cost any time out of your schedule. Frequent or prolonged intake of sugary foods enables bacteria to maintain an acidic environment on the surface of your teeth.
Soft and sticky foods cling to the biting surfaces of the teeth and stay there until it’s brushed off. Saliva will spread the sugar between the teeth, and to the front and back.
So, what should you do?
- Be careful of sugary or acidic foods.
- When eating starchy foods such as bread, cereal and pasta, minimise the time teeth are exposed by eating them with meals.
- Substitute sugary snacks with sugar-free gum and mints.
- Drink high-sugar beverages through a straw, then rinse your mouth with water and brush within 30 minutes. But be careful, brushing to quickly following a meal can damage your teeth’s enamel.
- Practice general “good health” eating habits. If you have any doubts, check on the Internet!
By following these simple nutritional rules, you can ensure optimal dental health, saving time and money!
