[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Due to dental-health neglect, many oral health problems develop gradually. On the other hand, a pain or sensitivity in your teeth can occur anytime, anywhere. With this, you may need immediate dental treatment from a dental professional or at the emergency room.
Your dental team at Prevent Dental Suite realise how difficult it is to deal with a dental emergency without knowledge. Knowing what to do when you or your loved one has a dental injury is critical. That is why we have prepared a handy guide to common dental emergencies we usually manage in our dental clinic.
First aid for Dental Emergencies
Toothaches
Many people rush to dental clinics due to dental pain, or commonly referred to as a toothache. Since it has different causes, a toothache calls for a professional examination so your dentist can recommend the correct course of action in order to stop the pain and save the tooth. The most common cause of toothache is neglected tooth decay. Putting off your dental visit is a bad decision. This will only intensify the pain later on, resulting in a throbbing and unbearable toothache.
Toothache first aid:
- Rinse your mouth with warm water or mix in a little salt if possible.
- Take some pain medication: ibuprofen or paracetamol.
- Don’t take or apply aspirin to the tooth or gum tissues.
- See your dentist as soon as possible.
Damaged Teeth or External Trauma
Make sure that your situation has stabilized if you’ve been in an accident and experienced some kind of injury to the mouth. Ensure that you are safe from further harm. After this, determine the extent of the damage to your teeth. If your tooth has been knocked out or is badly broken, remember these basic principles: Save, Sanitize and See. Save the tooth or any fragments. Sanitize any tooth pieces by rinsing. See your dental professional immediately.
Damaged Teeth first aid:
- Locate the tooth and pick it up by the crown. Do not touch the root.
- Wash the tooth briefly for few seconds if it is dirty. You can use milk or water to rinse the tooth
- Reposition the tooth and gently bite down on a clean cloth to hold it in position.
- If repositioning the tooth is not possible, place it in a suitable storage medium such as a glass of milk or a container for avulsed teeth if available.
- You can also transport the tooth in the mouth. If the patient is very young, he or she could swallow the tooth. Thus, get the patient to spit in a container and put the tooth in it. Don’t store the tooth in water.
- Seek emergency dental treatment right away.
Abscesses
Infections that occur around the tooth or between the teeth and gums are called abscesses. They can be serious and life threatening in some cases. If left untreated, an abscess can damage the tissue and surrounding teeth with the infection spread to other parts of the body.
Abscess first aid:
- If you see a pimple-like swelling, rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution. Rinse your mouth with this solution several times a day.
- Go see your dentist soon.
Simple Dental Emergency Kit and Precautions
What can you do to be prepared? You can somewhat prepare for dental emergencies by packing your own emergency dental care and following simple to avoid accident and mouth injuries.
Prepare an emergency dental kit by including the contact details of your dentists such as phone number as well as home and office address. Include a small container with lid to transport an avulsed tooth in a dental emergency. Add a handkerchief, gauze and pressure activated ice pack. Do not forget to include pain medications like ibuprofen and paracetamol, but not aspirin.
When participating in sports or recreational activities, always wear a mouth guard for protection. Don’t chew ice, popcorn kernels or any hard solid foods that can chip or crack your tooth. Avoid using your teeth to open or cut things.
